I often joke that my primary job in mothering is delivering food. Between snacks, meals, “I’m thirsty!,” “I don’t want that, I want this instead!”, food shopping, meal planning, and more snack moments – each day runs away from you quickly! I’m patiently waiting for that day they can prepare their OWN food so I can snag just a little bit of time back in my day. But when left to their own devices, what will they choose? One can only consume so many Goldfish and pretzels before nutritional deficiency occurs. How do we inspire our kids to make good choices and be more independent when it comes to what they eat?
We get them involved in the process!
Like any skill we want our kids to learn, we reinforce home learning with trusted sources. We seek out coaches and teachers to help guide our children down meaningful paths. And getting some support in the kitchen in an excellent way to achieve both the excitement and educational value that comes with learning how to cook. Thankfully, our area has a great resource for this!
Kathy Wolpher founded Kathy’s Just Desserts, Inc. in 2001. It began as a home-based baking business, but Kathy quickly missed teaching. She worked for many years as a technical trainer and elementary teacher. So she combined her education and work experience with her passion for food and began teaching culinary enrichment programs for children and adults. Eventually, this spun off into her Kitchen Wizards® division.
Kitchen Wizards® offers in-home cooking birthday parties, summer cooking camps, school socials/fundraisers, scout workshops, Ladies’ Night Out events, corporate teambuilding, and programs for special needs adults and for senior citizens. Kitchen Wizards® helps kids of all ages (ages 4-94) to discover the magic of cooking, one bite at a time®!
Children who have an interest in cooking and baking benefit from Kitchen Wizards® programs because they learn a life skill and discover that what they’re learning in the classroom has importance in “real life” situations.
Cooking reinforces math and literacy skills along with following directions. When done in this social atmosphere, children pull on collaborative and communication skills to execute the task. The artistry of cooking and baking taps into a child’s creative channels. Children also learn about cleanliness and a bit of nutrition along the way. And the pride achieved by creating something from scratch is truly noteworthy. Kitchen Wizards® ignites a love of culinary arts in those who participate in camps and programs. They become more comfortable working in the kitchen, and picky kids just might try a new food!
Adults who enjoy a fun night out with their spouse or friends come to Kitchen Wizards® adult programs to learn some new recipes or trends and eat lots of good food.
Kitchen Wizards® has 20 instructors in the Philadelphia suburbs and at the NJ shore. In the North Penn area, you’ll find their courses frequently at North Penn HS, Montgomery Twp, Upper Gwynedd Twp, Souderton HS, the Methacton area, Perkasie, and many other locations in both Bucks and Montgomery counties. And don’t forget about their offerings down the shore too!
To find offerings and registration info near you, consult their calendar at www.kitchenwizards.info/events . This is updated often, so check back frequently!
